How It Works: Mode of Action

Chlorpyrifos is an IRAC Group 1B insecticide. It blocks an enzyme needed to keep insect nerve signals under control.

  1. Susceptible insects are exposed: The product has contact and stomach activity.
  2. Normal nerve-signal control is blocked: Nerve signals continue when they should stop.
  3. Insect movement fails: The resulting disruption leads to paralysis and death of susceptible insects.

The manufacturer also describes vapour action. This does not authorize indoor fogging or an improvised fumigation treatment. Use only the labelled route, and manage resistance with pest monitoring and suitable alternative modes of action.

Target Crops & Pests

Chlorpyrifos is banned for use on ber, citrus and tobacco under the Indian restriction dated 3 October 2023. These crops are excluded even if older product material lists them.

Dosage & Application Guide

¹ Crops: Crystal’s published crop quantities are retained below as brand references, not complete directions. Match the current Dursban label’s route, timing, water and waiting periods before application.

² Buildings: termite treatment needs a separate site-specific programme. Its product and water quantities are not agricultural acre rates. Harvest intervals do not apply to buildings; follow the site’s re-entry requirements. No building-treatment dilution is supplied here.

Manufacturer brand quantities per acre: paddy 500–750 ml; beans 1,200 ml; gram 1,000 ml; sugarcane 300–600 ml; cotton 500–1,500 ml. These ranges are not permission to use any dose against any pest.

Remaining manufacturer brand quantities per acre: groundnut 400–460 ml; mustard 200 ml; brinjal 400 ml; cabbage 800 ml; onion 2,000 ml; apple 1,500–2,000 ml. No per-litre concentration is established by these quantities.

Chlorpyrifos 20% EC formulation reference only: paddy hispa, gall midge and stem borer are paired with 1,250 ml product/ha and 500–1,000 L water/ha, approximately 505.9 ml with 202.3–404.7 L water per acre. The generic leaf-folder entry has 1,875 ml/ha with the same water, approximately 758.8 ml/acre; confirm that the labelled target matches the brand’s leaf-roller entry.

Bean pod borer: 3,000 ml/ha with 500–1,000 L water/ha, approximately 1,214.1 ml with 202.3–404.7 L water per acre. Gram cutworm: 2,500 ml/ha with 500–1,000 L water/ha, approximately 1,011.7 ml with 202.3–404.7 L water per acre. This generic bean record does not establish an aphid programme.

Sugarcane reference records, each with 500–1,000 L water/ha, approximately 202.3–404.7 L/acre: black bug 750 ml/ha, approximately 303.5 ml/acre; early shoot and stalk borer 1,250–1,500 ml/ha, approximately 505.9–607.0 ml/acre; pyrilla 1,500 ml/ha, approximately 607.0 ml/acre.

Cotton reference records, each with 500–1,000 L water/ha, approximately 202.3–404.7 L/acre: aphids, bollworms and whiteflies 1,250 ml/ha, approximately 505.9 ml/acre; cutworm 3,750 ml/ha, approximately 1,517.6 ml/acre. These are different target-specific quantities.

Groundnut reference records, each with 500–1,000 L water/ha, approximately 202.3–404.7 L/acre: aphids 1,000 ml/ha, approximately 404.7 ml/acre; root grub 1,125 ml/ha, approximately 455.3 ml/acre.

Mustard aphids: 500 ml/ha, approximately 202.3 ml/acre. Brinjal shoot and fruit borer: 1,000 ml/ha, approximately 404.7 ml/acre. Cabbage diamondback moth: 2,000 ml/ha, approximately 809.4 ml/acre. Onion root grub: 5,000 ml/ha, approximately 2,023.4 ml/acre. Each of these formulation records pairs the product with 500–1,000 L water/ha, approximately 202.3–404.7 L/acre.

Apple aphids have a distinct formulation reference: 3,750–5,000 ml product/ha with 1,500–2,000 L water/ha, approximately 1,517.6–2,023.4 ml product with 607.0–809.4 L water per acre. Do not substitute a field-crop water range.

* The formulation references above do not establish Dursban’s current crop-specific application route, treatment stage, repeat interval, harvest or re-entry period. Use only when the supplied pack confirms the whole programme. Missing harvest periods are not zero-day intervals.

The building-termite scope is separate from crop use. No building dilution, treatment volume, indoor application or re-entry instruction is supplied here. Obtain the complete current building-treatment directions before use.

How to Apply: Best Practices

  • Check restrictions first: Do not use on ber, citrus or tobacco. Check any additional applicable local restrictions before selecting the product.
  • Match the precise pest: Do not flatten a wide crop dose range into one rate. Cotton cutworm, cotton sucking pests and the individual sugarcane targets have different reference quantities.
  • Confirm the route: Use the current pack’s crop-specific route and stage. Do not transfer a leaf-spray, soil treatment or seed-treatment method between uses.
  • Keep building treatment separate: Pre- and post-construction termite work requires the complete site-specific directions and precautions. Agricultural crop doses are not building instructions.
  • Avoid unapproved mixtures: Do not assume universal compatibility with crop-protection products. Use only a mixture supported by the applicable labels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Dursban?Dursban is a chlorpyrifos 20% EC insecticide with contact and stomach activity. It belongs to IRAC Group 1B.

Can Dursban be used on ber, citrus or tobacco? No. Chlorpyrifos use on these crops is prohibited under the Indian restriction dated 3 October 2023. Their older published rates are not included here.

Does one dose cover every pest on a crop? No. For example, the qualified cotton reference uses different quantities for cutworm and for aphids, bollworms or whiteflies. Always match the precise target and complete current label programme.

Can I use a crop dose against building termites? No. Building protection is a separate pre- or post-construction use. It requires its own dilution, treatment volume, application method and re-entry directions.

Does a missing harvest interval mean immediate harvest is allowed? No. The supplied Dursban label must establish the applicable interval. A dash or missing number cannot be treated as zero days.
