Calaris Xtra - Mesotrione 2.27% w/w + Atrazine 22.7% w/w SC - Syngenta
Calaris Xtra Herbicide | Mesotrione 2.27% w/w + Atrazine 22.7% w/w SC
A selective post-emergence herbicide for the specified grasses, broad-leaved weeds and sedges in maize and sugarcane.
What it controls: The listed grass weeds, broad-leaved weeds and sedges in maize and sugarcane.
When to use it: One post-emergence application when actively growing target weeds have 3–4 leaves.
What to include: The area-based dose and water quantity, a flat-fan or flood-jet deflector nozzle, and adequate soil moisture.
Why Choose This Product? Key Benefits
-
🌽Selective treatment for two crops: Calaris Xtra is intended for the labelled post-emergence uses in maize and sugarcane. It allows the target weeds to be treated in these standing crops when all label conditions are met; it is not a general herbicide recommendation for other crops.
-
🌿Covers several weed groups: The crop-specific lists include grasses, broad-leaved weeds and sedges. Identifying the mix first helps determine whether the product matches the field, rather than assuming that a broad-spectrum description includes every weed species.
-
🧬Two different modes of action: Mesotrione and atrazine affect different parts of the weed’s light-dependent growth processes. This supplies HRAC Groups 27 and 5 in the same formulation, while still requiring responsible resistance management.
-
🧴A ready-made two-active formulation: The ingredients are already combined in an SC formulation, so there is no need to make a separate mesotrione-plus-atrazine tank mix. In fact, the leaflet instructs users not to tank-mix this product with another chemical.
-
🍃A clear early post-emergence window: The specified 3–4-leaf stage of actively growing weeds provides a practical scouting trigger. Treating the appropriate young weeds with good foliage coverage helps match the application to the intended use, without inventing a fixed number of days after sowing.

How It Works: Mode of Action
Calaris Xtra combines mesotrione and atrazine in a selective post-emergence treatment. The two active ingredients interfere with processes that susceptible weeds need to use light and maintain growth.
-
Cover emerged, actively growing weeds: Apply the mixture at the 3–4-leaf stage of the weeds, with sufficient water for thorough foliage coverage. Suitable soil moisture and an unstressed crop are important application conditions.
-
Interrupt pigment protection and photosynthesis: Mesotrione inhibits HPPD, an enzyme involved in the production of protective plant pigments. Atrazine inhibits photosystem II, disrupting an essential part of photosynthesis. These are two different target sites, HRAC Groups 27 and 5.
-
Suppress susceptible weed growth: The combined disruptions lead to control of susceptible weeds in the label’s crop-specific spectrum. Check the field afterwards rather than assuming that every later weed or an unlisted species has been covered.
Do not use the same herbicide or mode of action continuously in the same or next crop season. Where another treatment is needed, use an approved product with a different mode of action in a locally appropriate weed-management programme. Do not solve a surviving-weed problem by repeating Calaris Xtra beyond its one-application limit.
Target Crops & Pests
The following weeds are listed for each crop. Scientific names are retained to help distinguish similar-looking grasses and sedges.

Apply once, post-emergence, at the 3–4-leaf stage of actively growing weeds. The maximum number of applications is one. Do not confuse the weed leaf stage with the crop leaf stage.
*The leaflet gives product and water per hectare, not an independent dose per litre or per tank. Use the area-based quantities and calibrated output; no extra adjuvant or tank partner is included in this recommendation.
The PHI is the waiting period from last application to harvest: 42 days in maize and 190 days in sugarcane. The separate re-entry interval is 24 hours.
How to Apply: Best Practices
-
Check crop, weeds and moisture: Confirm maize or sugarcane, the listed weeds and their 3–4-leaf stage. Apply with sufficient soil moisture while weeds are actively growing. Do not spray a crop under stress.
-
Choose suitable weather: Avoid windy weather, hot periods of the day, wet foliage and impending rain. Direct the application at the intended area, protect neighbouring crops and avoid overlap or exceeding the recommended rate.
-
Mix the product on its own: Add the measured product to a small amount of water and mix, then add the remaining quantity with thorough agitation. Do not tank-mix with any other chemical. A premixed product is not an invitation to add an insecticide, fungicide, herbicide or spreader.
-
Use appropriate spray equipment: Use a knapsack or another suitable sprayer fitted with a flat-fan or flood-jet deflector nozzle. Apply enough of the specified water volume to cover weed foliage thoroughly. The leaflet does not authorize improvised alternate delivery methods.
-
Plan the following crop: For maize, the leaflet identifies maize–rapeseed/mustard and maize–wheat/maize–barley rotations. For sugarcane, it identifies sugarcane–black gram, sugarcane–moong bean and sugarcane–mustard rotations. Do not assume that an unlisted succeeding crop is unrestricted; check the current pack and obtain local advice.
-
Wear protection and restrict access: Use protective clothing with full sleeves and pants, chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection, mask and boots. Avoid skin contact because repeated or prolonged contact may cause an allergic reaction. Do not enter the treated area for 24 hours.
-
Clean equipment without polluting water: Rinse equipment and handle washings according to the label, away from water supplies and drains. Do not contaminate irrigation or drinking water, ponds, rivers, lakes or drainage systems. Do not allow grazing in newly treated areas, and keep all livestock out until the treated area is dry.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is Calaris Xtra for pre-emergence or post-emergence use?
This Indian recommendation is a post-emergence use in maize and sugarcane. Apply once when the target weeds are actively growing and have 3–4 leaves. Do not substitute a pre-emergence programme or a fixed days-after-sowing schedule from another product.
2. Can I use it in soybean or another crop?
No such use is included here. The labelled crops are maize and sugarcane. Rotation references describe what may follow the treated crop under the leaflet’s conditions; they do not mean that the product can be sprayed directly on those following crops.
3. Can I mix a spreader, insecticide or another herbicide with it?
The leaflet says not to tank-mix Calaris Xtra with any other chemical. Use it on its own as directed. A compatibility claim elsewhere, or the fact that another product contains similar active ingredients, does not override that product-specific restriction.
4. Can I spray again if new weeds appear?
The maximum number of Calaris Xtra applications is one for the stated programme. Do not automatically repeat it against a later flush or surviving weeds. Identify the weeds, review timing and coverage, and obtain advice on suitable alternative management within the crop’s approved options.
5. Are harvest, re-entry and crop rotation the same restriction?
They address different situations. Wait 24 hours before entering the treated area. Respect 42 days to harvest in maize or 190 days in sugarcane, measured from the last application. Crop-rotation directions separately guide the following crop and cannot be replaced by either time interval.
