Basta 15 SL Herbicide by BASF

Glufosinate-ammonium 13.5% w/w SL

What it controls: The listed annual and perennial weeds in tea and cotton.

When to use it: After weed emergence, during active weed growth.

What to include: A directed, shielded spray that avoids all contact with the crop.

Why Choose This Product? Key Benefits

  • 🌿  Broad weed spectrum: Controls the specific grasses, sedges and broadleaf weeds listed for each crop.
  • 🌱  Post-emergence use: Targets weeds that are already growing rather than a pre-emergence soil application.
  • 🍃  Contact action: Acts on exposed weed foliage reached by the spray.
  • 🛡️  Shielded application: The directed-spray method helps keep the herbicide away from tea and cotton plants.

How It Works: Mode of Action

Basta is a non-selective contact herbicide. It can damage crops and other desirable plants if spray reaches their green tissue.

  1. Contact the weeds: The directed spray wets target weed foliage.
  2. Inhibit an enzyme: Glufosinate-ammonium blocks glutamine synthetase.
  3. Damage treated tissue: Ammonia accumulates and normal cell processes are disrupted, causing tissue death and weed withering.

Contact action is not a crop-safety guarantee. Never spray over the crop and do not allow spray drift onto desirable plants.

  • Shaggy buttonweed (Borreria hispida)
  • Large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis)
  • Tropical spiderwort (Commelina benghalensis)

  • Purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus)
  • Digitaria grass (Digitaria marginata)
  • Crowfoot grass (Dactyloctenium aegyptium)

Dosage & Application Guide

Use the crop-specific programme below for the listed weeds only. Keep all spray off the crop and other desirable plants. PHI is the minimum interval from the last application to harvest.

First timing: after emergence, at active vegetative growth of weeds.
96 days

The cotton leaflet table separately lists 2.5–3.0 L/ha (approximately 1,012–1,214 ml/acre). Its application text specifies 3.0 L/ha, which is the rate used in the complete row above. Do not select a lower rate from the separate table range without the supplied pack’s crop-specific rate-selection directions.

Acre figures are approximate conversions; original hectare quantities are retained. No fixed per-litre or tank dose is provided. Do not replace area-based measurement with a guessed concentration. Harvest restrictions, worker re-entry and repeat-treatment intervals are separate requirements; do not assume a missing interval is zero.

How to Apply: Best Practices

  • Tea timing: Apply to actively growing weeds; the tea directions also include the weed flowering stage.
  • Cotton timing: Apply when weeds are in active vegetative growth.
  • Protect the crop: Use a spray shield. Direct the spray onto weeds only, not tea or cotton plants, and avoid windy conditions.
  • Sprayer and mixing: Use a knapsack sprayer with a flat-fan or flood-jet nozzle and a spray shield. Add the measured product to some water, stir, then add the remaining water and stir again.
  • Harvest: Observe 15 days before tea harvest and 96 days before cotton harvest.

Do not add another pesticide, fertilizer or adjuvant unless both current product labels permit the combination for the crop and method. Do not substitute another brand, concentration or overseas directions. Follow the pack’s weather precautions and rain-free period rather than assuming a fixed rainfast interval. Record the crop, field, date and product amount, and observe all harvest, worker-entry and repeat restrictions before the next operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Basta selective to tea or cotton?

No. It is non-selective. Use a shielded, directed spray on the weeds and keep it off the crop.

Why does the name say 15 SL but the composition say 13.5%?

The BASF leaflet states 15% weight/volume, equivalent to 13.5% weight/weight. They describe this same formulation on different bases.

When should the weeds be treated?

Treat emerged weeds during active growth. The tea programme also allows the weed flowering stage.

What is the harvest interval?

The labelled interval is 15 days for tea and 96 days for cotton.

Can I spray it over the whole cotton crop?

No. Keep the spray directed at weeds using a shield and avoid contact with cotton foliage and other green crop tissue.

Safety & Disclaimer

Before you use it: Read and follow the supplied Indian label and leaflet, including the permitted crop, weeds, method, harvest interval and precautions. Basta is non-selective: never spray over the crop. Use the required spray shield and prevent drift onto crop foliage or other desirable plants.
