BASF Basta: Product Overview

BASF Basta is a non-selective, post-emergence contact herbicide containing Glufosinate-Ammonium 13.5% w/w SL. Its verified Indian uses are control of listed annual and perennial weeds in tea and cotton.

Basta belongs to HRAC/WSSA Group 10 (legacy HRAC H). Glufosinate-ammonium inhibits the plant enzyme glutamine synthetase. Ammonia then accumulates in susceptible weed cells, causing cell injury, necrotic symptoms and eventual withering. BASF notes that the onset of visible symptoms varies with weed species and environmental conditions, so a fixed result time should not be promised.

Because Basta is non-selective, it can damage green crop tissue that receives spray. In tea, BASF specifically directs the use of a spray shield to prevent drift onto the tea plants. Treat only the target weed foliage with calibrated equipment, keep the spray off the crop and follow the current physical label.

Why farmers choose itWhy Choose Basta?
  • Verified tea and cotton uses: the Indian use record gives crop-specific weeds, formulation rates, water volumes and PHIs.
  • Broad weed spectrum: the listed targets include annual and perennial grasses, broadleaf weeds and, in cotton, purple nutsedge.
  • Post-emergence contact action: the spray acts through contacted green weed tissue, making accurate placement and uniform coverage important.
  • Directed application: a shielded or hooded treatment helps protect the crop from this non-selective herbicide.
  • Defined harvest intervals: the verified PHI is 15 days for tea and 96 days for cotton.

Product scienceHow Basta Works
  1. Contact with weed foliage: correctly directed spray reaches exposed green weed tissue.
  2. Enzyme inhibition: Glufosinate-ammonium blocks glutamine synthetase, disrupting normal nitrogen metabolism.
  3. Cell injury: ammonia accumulates in susceptible cells, leading to necrotic symptoms and withering.

Basta is not presented here as a selective over-the-top crop spray, a universal weed treatment or a guaranteed root kill. Coverage, weed growth stage, weather and accurate placement affect results. This page makes no tank-mix recommendation; apply Basta solo under its current label.

Useful detailsHow to Apply and Use Safely
  • Identify both the crop and the listed target weeds before use. Measure the treated area and formulation accurately, and calibrate the sprayer for the specified water volume.
  • Apply only as a directed spray to actively growing weeds. In tea, use a spray shield. For cotton, prevent drift or splash onto green crop tissue.
  • Apply Basta solo. No tank-mix, fertilizer-mix, adjuvant or simultaneous-application recommendation is made on this page.
  • Wear chemical-resistant gloves, protective clothing and tightly fitting eye protection. Avoid breathing mist or vapour, and do not eat, drink or smoke while handling the product.
  • Prevent product, spray liquid and contaminated wash water from reaching soil outside the target area, drains, surface water or groundwater.
  • Store locked in the original tightly closed container, in a cool, well-ventilated place away from food, feed, heat, freezing and direct sunlight.
Use with careSafety and Disclaimer

BASF's Basta SL150 safety data sheet carries the signal word “Danger” and states that the product can cause serious eye damage, is toxic in contact with skin, is harmful if swallowed and is harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. It also warns about reproductive and repeated-exposure nervous-system hazards. If exposure occurs, follow the current pack's first-aid directions and seek medical help with the container or label available. Always read and follow the current Indian label and leaflet; the physical pack is the final authority for approved crop, weed, dose, water volume, timing, PHI, PPE, first aid, storage, disposal and environmental precautions.
