BASF Basagran: Product Overview

BASF Basagran is a contact herbicide containing Bentazone 480 g/L SL. Its verified Indian uses are early post-emergence control of listed weeds in soybean and transplanted rice.

Basagran belongs to HRAC/WSSA Group 6. Bentazone blocks Photosystem II electron transport, interrupting photosynthesis and the production of energy required for susceptible weed growth. Because it acts mainly through contacted foliage, accurate timing and thorough, uniform leaf coverage are important.

The official Indian major-use record specifies 2,000 ml formulation per hectare in 500 litres of water. BASF India's practical field guide states 800 ml per acre in 200 litres of water. The store's 800 ml variant therefore matches BASF's stated one-acre formulation rate, but the spray must still be calibrated to the treated area and required water volume.

Why farmers choose itWhy Choose Basagran?
  • Verified crop uses: soybean and transplanted rice are listed in India's major-use record for Bentazone 480 g/L SL.
  • Early post-emergence timing: apply when listed weeds are young, at the 2-3 leaf stage.
  • Contact activity: the spray acts on contacted foliage, making good coverage central to the application.
  • Defined field rate: 2 L/ha in 500 L water, with BASF's corresponding guide of 800 ml/acre in 200 L water.
  • Clear residue intervals: the verified PHI is 62 days for soybean and 71 days for transplanted rice.

Product scienceHow Basagran Works
  1. Foliar contact: spray deposited on susceptible weed leaves is absorbed through the treated foliage.
  2. Photosynthesis interruption: Bentazone blocks Photosystem II electron transport and suppresses carbon-dioxide assimilation.
  3. Growth stops: after a period of growth stagnation, susceptible treated tissue declines and the weed dies.

Basagran is not presented here as a residual, universal or guaranteed weed-control treatment. Performance depends on spraying the correct listed weeds while young, using the full area-based rate and obtaining uniform coverage. This page makes no tank-mix recommendation; apply Basagran solo under its current label.

Do not publish a free-standing universal ml-per-litre dose. Calibrate the sprayer to the treated area and the specified water volume. The physical label remains the final authority if its directions differ.

Useful detailsHow to Apply and Use Safely
  • Apply only to the listed crops and weeds at the stated early post-emergence stage. Measure the field area and formulation accurately.
  • Use clean water and a calibrated sprayer. Direct a uniform spray onto exposed weed foliage because Basagran is a contact herbicide.
  • For transplanted rice, remove standing water before spraying so the weeds are exposed. BASF directs re-irrigation after 24-48 hours.
  • Apply Basagran solo. No tank-mix, fertilizer-mix or simultaneous-application recommendation is made on this page.
  • Wear protective gloves and eye/face protection, avoid breathing spray mist, and do not eat, drink or smoke while using the product. Wash exposed skin and contaminated clothing after use.
  • Prevent spray, runoff and containers from reaching drains, surface water or groundwater. Store in the original labelled container, away from children, food, feed, heat and direct sunlight.
Use with careSafety and Disclaimer

BASF's safety data sheet uses the signal word “Warning” and states that the product is harmful if swallowed, causes serious eye irritation and may cause an allergic skin reaction. If exposure occurs, follow the pack's first-aid directions and seek medical advice with the container or label available. Always read and follow the current Indian Basagran label and leaflet. The physical pack is the final authority for approved crop, weed, dose, water volume, timing, PHI, PPE, first aid, storage, disposal and environmental precautions.
